Sophia doesn't like being left behind...with anything! So, when Jacob learned how to ride his bike without training wheels last year, Sophia wanted to learn too. Her size was somewhat of an obstacle...considering she couldn't even reach the pedals on her bike. But after a year of growing, she was finally tall enough!
So, she started this summer by learning how to ride a bike with training wheels.
Within a couple weeks, she was asking if we could take the training wheels off. Well, that's just something most parents aren't willing to do. But Jacob thought nothing of it!
Throughout the summer, Jacob would take Sophia out to the cul de sac, or in our front yard and hold the back of her seat while she pedalled frantically, only to end up on the grass with her legs entangled amongst the wheels of the bike. We figured they'd give up eventually, and she'd realize she needed a little bit more time to trust herself on 4 wheels before she jumped on a bike with only 2.
Then yesterday, I was standing by our front door and saw this remarkable site:
And with a little push, and a cheering big brother, Sophia rode around the cul de sac like a champion! And she hasn't looked back since.
I haven't decided if it's sad that Craig and I weren't the ones to teach our little girl how to ride her bike without training wheels...or if it's totally awesome that our 6 year old did!
Either way, it was touching to see our 2 oldest kids working together, cheering each other on, and celebrating the accomplishment.
